What is a Telephone Switching Device

When two people want to talk over the phone, only two telephone sets connected by two copper wires are required. However, a switching device is necessary if people around the world are to communicate over the phone at the same time.
Since the invention of the telephone over a century ago, the telephone exchange has evolved through five stages:
Stage1:  Manual switch by human operators, including magneto telephone switchboards in the earliest days and common battery telephone exchanges later

Stage2: Electromechanical exchange, including step-by-step automatic exchanges and crossbar switches
Stage3:  Electronic switch
Stage4:  Digital switch
Stage5:  IMS switch is a technology expected to become the future mainstream. IMS offers a multimedia service platform using the Internet Protocol (IP) and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) with an IP network environment. By combining voice and data, this platform enables telecommunications carriers to develop and offer more diverse and integrated services.
