阿里山站 Alishan Station
阿里山鐵路主要為開發阿里山區林產，從1906年開始興建至1912年才完成第一段由嘉義到二萬坪的鐵路，1914年再延伸至沼平站，完成71.9公里的本線，1918 年開始載客服務。過去使用的直立汽缸蒸 氣火車頭，裝置傘型齒輪雖有助於下坡減速，但卻跑不快，登山時最高時速只有11公里，連人跑步都追得上。
The Alishan Forest Railway was originally built to develop the forestry industry in Alishan. Construction of the first segment, which runs between Chiayi and Erwanping, started in 1906 and finished in 1912. It was extended to Zhaoping Station to complete the full line of 71.9 km, and started transporting passengers in 1918. The Cylinder Vertical Engines with umbrella-shaped gears really helped to reduce speed on declines, but it was very slow and could only reach 11 km/hour when ascending; it could even be overtaken by joggers.
