An Airport on the Highland with A Thousand Lakes, Taoyuan is the Door to the World
Taoyuan Airport Station
In 1973, the need for transportation by air grew rapidly. Taipei Songshan Airport was unable to meet the demand, so an international airport was built in Taoyuan. There is no river running through the Taoyuan highland, where the airport was built, so huge cavities were dug to store water, and they can be seen all over the place. At its highest point, there were 10,000 of these ponds. As the Shihmen Dam was completed, and construction began on Taoyuan and Shihmen canals, coupled with industrial and storage/transportation industries, these ponds started to disappear.
