People and Trees, Growing Old Together; Dawu Traditional Canoe

Lanyu Station

Lanyu in the Tao language means "Island of the People". Looking at Lanyu from Taitung at dusk, one can see that the Island is dyed red by the sun, so it was called Red Head Island. It was renamed Lanyu when butterfly orchids were discovered all over the island. The Tao people are known for their traditional canoes, which are made with small axes. The main types of transportation between Taiwan and Lanyu are planes and vessels, which also carry everyday necessities and tourists who come to learn more about the Flying Fish culture. The winds of autumn and winter often impact off-island transportation.
